Stone Estimating
One Ton = 2,000 lbs.
One Cubic Yard = 27 Cubic Feet 3’x3’x3’ = 27 cubic feet
Surface area is measured in Square Feet = i.e. length x width 10’x10’ = 100 sq. ft.
Surface area is the face that you see, the Bed depth is important to support the rock.
In this illustration, the bed depth is 3½”, the face is 2¼” x 8”
Full Dimensional Stone
Approx. 1.5 tons per pallet
Building Stone 3″ to 5″ Bedding Depth approx. 35-40 sq. ft. per ton
Stone Veneers - Full Thickness +- 3” to 7” (bedding Depth)
Square Feet (SF) = Length (L) x Width (W)
-
Coverage per ton approximately 35 to 40 SF
-
Approx. 125 sq. ft. per pallet
Natural Stone must be thoroughly washed prior to installation.
Stone Veneers - Thin +- ¾” to 1 ½” (bedding Depth)
Square Feet (SF) = Length (L) x Width (W) Flats (with sawn backs):
-
Approximately 14 to 16 lbs per SF Flats (hand selected thin):
-
Approx. 125 sq. ft. per pallet
Natural Stone must be thoroughly washed prior to installation.
Flagstone
-
Thin Patio ½” to 1″ thick covers approx. 180-150 sq. ft.
-
Patio Grade 1″ to 2″ thick covers approx. 120-100 sq. ft.
-
Slabs 2″ to 3″ thick covers approx. 100-75 sq. ft.
Wallstone
Cubic Feet (CF) = Length (L) x Height (H) x Width (W)
-
Coverage per ton approximately 11 to 12 CF
-
Coverage per pallet approximately covers approximately 12 CF per pallet
Flagstone – (irregularly shaped)
Square Feet (SF) = Length (L) x Width (W), The thicker the stone, the less coverage per ton.
-
Coverage per ton for 1.5” to 3” thick stone approximately 65 to 75 SF
-
Coverage per ton for 1” to 2” thick stone approximately 80 SF Weight for ¾” thick stone approximately 10 lbs per SF or 200 SF per ton
-
Coverage per ton for 1” Irregular Flagstone approximately 100 to 110 SF
-
Coverage per ton for 1.5” Irregular Flagstone approximately 75 to 80 SF
-
Coverage per ton for Garden Path Stone approximately 60 SF
Lineal Feet (LF) = Over all Length (L)
Corners: One lineal foot of corner equals one LF of corner stone*
*NOTE: Corner pieces are measured from the longest length of the stone. When calculating, factor waste for trimming the stone and squaring the length of the corners.
FACTORS THAT AFFECT COVERAGE INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
· Width of joint or spaces between stones
· Number of corners needed to be sorted, trimmed or deducted from flat pieces
· Type of stone selected and whether it tends to run thick or thin, mosaic or cut
· Sorting or discarding colors or shapes that are a natural range of the stone
· Excessive trimming of stone
· Size and thickness variation of the stone
· Stone will require some cutting and shaping to achieve the desired look
· Factor a minimum of 10% to 25% for waste based on the factors above
Note:
We presort all of our stone to meet the dimension as specified in our catalog, as well as color. If you want something special, please contact us and well will do our best to service you.

Nature & Origin
Natural Stone comes from solid formation of comprised minerals. There are thousands of types of stone including Argillite, Granite, Marble, Limestone, Sandstone, Slate, Onyx and Travertine that have been quarried for centuries from locations around the world. Some Hard-Natural Stones are an excellent choice for construction and landscape purposes. Not unlike wood, each stone has unique natural veining, pitting, fissures, micro-cracks and color variations including patterns, markings, darker or lighter spots including a varying amount of natural minerals such as iron-oxide and copper that are all-natural characteristics of this stone. These characteristics are not meant to be deficiencies or faults, nor can they be avoided in mining. The surface of natural Stone is not consistently smooth and shiny to the eye or touch.
Products
Landscape Stone
Natural stone sizes are as the defined on the price sheet and the stone as generally described above.
Flagstone and structural products need to be installed with some wisdom.
Good rule of thumb
Each Natural Flagstone Piece 1” (inch) depth should not cover more than 1 Square Foot
Each Natural Flagstone Piece 2” (inch) depth should not cover more than 2 Square Foot
Each Natural Flagstone Piece 3” (inch) depth should not cover more than 3 Square Foot
Etc.
Structural Failure due to lack of stone depth is not a warranty problem, it is an installation problem
Masonry Stone
Fascia and veneers products are hand selected with the intent to minimize fissures and micro-cracks. This selection process is to inspect for a solid blue core of argillite with no visible signs of Iron-oxide in the core of the stone. Each natural stone can have iron—oxide and copper on its surfaces.
Simulated stone brick is the same as Fascia and veneers except no iron—oxide and copper on its surfaces and cut to shape.
